Gorham Savings Bank in Falmouth Earns LEED® Gold Certification

by Maine Business Press

FALMOUTH, MAINE, December 14, 2011 – AlliedCook Construction and Gawron Turgeon Architects announce that the Gorham Savings Bank in Falmouth, Maine earned LEED® Gold certification through the U.S Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design New Construction Program (LEED NC v2.2). The LEED NC rating system is for commercial and other buildings to distinguish them as high-performing buildings.

“We see benefit from LEED certified building on many levels,” said Gorham Savings Bank’s Chris Emmons, CEO. “It leads to better work environments for employees, it creates a more inviting experience for visiting customers, it helps us use energy resources more responsibly, and over time, it pays for itself financially.”

The goal for this Falmouth branch was to achieve LEED Gold, one of the highest honors in green building and design.

“We are thrilled the project surpassed the credits needed to achieve a gold rating from the USGBC,” said Daniel Cook, Vice President of AlliedCook Construction.

The project earned 45 credits, which qualified for the goal of achieving the Gold rating.

“This goal was achieved based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community.” said Mary Turgeon, AAHID, IIDA, LEED AP, Principal at Gawron Turgeon Architects.

These features include:
• Recycled and rapidly renewable materials.
• Regional materials.
• Low emitting materials that reduce harmful indoor air contaminants.
• 95% views to the outside, and natural daylight inside.
• Open, vegetated space equal to the size of the building footprint.
• Solar domestic hot water.
• Solar reflective shingles to reduce localized heat island effect.
• 87% of construction waste diverted from land fills.
• Maximized building insulation to reduce energy use.

The result is a building that has 38% energy savings, a 30% reduction of water usage, and fresh air for building occupants.

“Buildings are a prime example of how human systems integrate with natural systems,” said Rick Fedrizzi, President, CEO & Founding Chair, U.S. Green Building Council. “The Gorham Savings Bank project efficiently uses our natural resources and makes an immediate, positive impact on our planet, which will tremendously benefit future generations to come.”
