Bangor, ME: Lawrence Barrett, Eastern Maine Community College’s new president, accepted a check on behalf of eleven EMCC students who are each recipients of a $1,000 scholarship from the Bangor Area Breakfast Rotary. Eight of the students have been named and will receive the scholarship immediately. The remaining three will be named in the spring of 2011.
“We are extremely pleased with the Rotary’s commitment to education and its commitment to our students,” said Barrett. “When these students introduce themselves next month at Rotary, you will know you have made a sound investment in intelligent, hard working people who will be our communities’ nurses, radiographers, builders and business people.”
This year’s scholarship award is year two of a three – year $30,000 commitment Bangor Area Breakfast Rotary made to the College in 2009. “We had been running a scholarship program for a number of years but it made sense to us to focus our efforts for a sustained period of time on one school,” said Dan Rozario, Chair of the Bangor Area Breakfast Rotary Scholarship Committee. “Eastern Maine Community College enrolls a large number of local students and those are the students we want to support. Many of those students are training for careers they will fill right here in the community.”
The scholarships are funded through proceeds from the Bangor Area Breakfast Rotary annual Christmas auction.
The scholarship recipients must be enrolled full time in a degree program at the College, have completed 12 credit hours, maintain a 2.5 grade point average or higher, be a Maine citizen and a graduate of a Bangor region high school and demonstrate financial need.
The following eight students have been awarded fall scholarships:
Ashley Adams, a Business Management major from Orono, volunteers for the Glenburn Lakeside Riders Snowmobile Club, the Glenburn Community Festival and the Maine Discovery Museum.
Cera Belyea, a Medical Radiography student from Hampden, enjoys helping children and volunteers at Camp Sunshine and was an active Key Club volunteer in high school.
Kristopher Foraker, a Building Construction major from Brewer, is committed to learning the “finer details” of the building construction trade. He volunteers for the Brewer Outdoor Education Program by assisting children with outdoor leadership skills and team building.
Kim Hamel, a Medical Radiography major from Old Town, is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society and volunteers with Girl Scouts, Muscular Dystrophy Association and United Way.
Morgan King, a Nursing major from Brewer, works full time with children with autism spectrum disorders while attending college full time. Morgan has a passion about helping others and volunteers with Autism Awareness and church related programs.
Seth McLaughlin, a Civil Engineering major from Old Town, works full time while attending school and volunteers in his community.
Madilynn Michaud, a Culinary Arts major from Bangor, loves seeing people enjoy food she has prepared and plans to become a professional personal chef and continue her education at the Culinary Institute of America in New York.
Michael Werner, a Business Management major from Hermon, was active with Junior ROTC at Hermon High School.
The students will introduce themselves with prepared speeches to the Bangor Area Breakfast Rotarians in October.
