EMERGE MAINE COMES TO ORONO THIS WEEKEND
Emerge Maine’s Class of 2011 will converge on the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center at the University of Maine Saturday (April 16th) to take part in its continuing political leadership training program. This weekend’s session focuses on campaign planning and cultural competency, the real nuts and bolts of running for office.
“Over the course of this year we’ve covered a lot of material—from how to choose a race, build a campaign budget and communicate effectively to how to qualify for clean elections, get out the vote and run smartly and ethically. As we get closer to graduation we feel confident that the women in this program will emerge with the tools and confidence necessary to run for public office—whether that office be a local zoning board or the state legislature,” says Katie Mae Simpson, executive director of Emerge Maine.
Nineteen women are in this year’s class and includes two college students, two nurses, a teacher, a social worker, a lawyer, a curator, a blogger and several who work in the public policy arena.
Emerge Maine, a political leadership training program for Democratic women in the state, has a strong track record with its graduates: 68 have graduated the program, with 29 women winning election or appointment to some level of office. Graduation day for the class of 2011 is set for May 7th.
