Kennebunk, Maine, September 30, 2010 – greenSpaces announced today that Fringe Hair Art of Kennebunkport Maine has completed its Green Business Certification, making it the first Certified Green Hair Salon in the State of Maine.
Fringe Hair Art worked directly with Kennebunk-based consultancy greenSpaces to review the development of their green practices and the completion of their green audit. As a result of Fringe’s ongoing commitment to reducing the use of resources and streamlining their business processes all while improving the client’s experience, Fringe Hair Art has qualified as a Silver Level Certified Green Business as defined by independent green practices monitor the Green Business League (GBL).
An authentic Green Business Certification from the GBL is the culmination of many months of preparation. When Fringe originally designed their space a year ago, the salon incorporated organic and green materials including recycled glass mosaics and the use of low volatile organic compound (VOC) paint. For hair color, the salon now uses iNOA, L’Oreal’s newest color line, which is odorless, ammonia free and uses less packaging to help reduce post consumer waste. Most recently the salon added the Brazilian Blowout, a long term hair straighten treatment, which is formaldehyde free.
All the members of the Fringe team have worked hard to make a variety of green improvements. Prior to the assessment, they eliminated the use of small plastic bottles and now serve salon clients refreshments in a glass. The salon is virtually paperless as they have converted to using digital document storage, digital photos and an electronic client communication system. Whenever possible training is done remotely via the internet thus eliminating excess travel.
As a result of the extensive green assessment performed by greenSpaces, Fringe will be switching all their light bulbs to LED lights which do not emit heat and save energy. They have now swapped all their traditional cleaning products for green alternatives, greatly improving the air quality for their clients.
“From day one it has been the salon’s intent to become more green,” said Artistic Director, Sheryl Miller Barrett. “We feel strongly that by earning our Green Certification and continuing to green our practices we are improving our clients’ experience. Our Green Certification validates our commitment of being a green and sustainable salon, and we hope our leadership will set an example for the business community to follow. We look forward to continuing making Fringe as green and as environmentally friendly as possible.”
Certified Green Consultant and greenSpaces President, Stephanie Conzelman, who guided Fringe’s process noted, “Most people don’t think that a hair salon can be green due to the hair coloring products but Fringe is a perfect example of how this can be achieved without sacrificing the deliverable service. Going green is a process, and a mindset. Changes small and large make a big difference over time. As more and more businesses begin to make different choices about facilities management, product usage and corporate practices, we will see the market for “green” grow. By focusing now ongoing green, Fringe is not only setting itself apart from its competitors, but it is laying the groundwork for environmentally friendly practices community–wide.”

Green Business Certification. GBL requires an on-site audit of all green practices and provides guidance for businesses seeking to validate their green character. Without this independent verification, businesses with only a few green practices call themselves green, otherwise known as “greenwashing.” For more information on GBL please visit their website www.greenbusinessleague.com.
